I WAS REALLY GETTING FED UP WITH THOSE DARN FRUIT FLIES

SO, I CHECKED THE INTERNET: A QUART JAR, A SHEET OF CARD STOCK , A LITTLE TAPE. A LITTLE BANANA PEEL AND VIOLA,

S U C C E S S

Fly traps built on this principle have been around for a very long time.

I built this one yesterday afternoon and within a very short time it had more flies

in it than are shown now. What did I do with them? you ask.

Well I wasn't going to turn them loose outside so I stuck the bottle in the freezer

and froze the little devils. This is the results of an after freeze, overnight catch.

I haven't been bothered by one of the little devils all morning.

So where do they come from?

We cart them home with the fresh fruit we buy at the grocery store etc.

Next time you are shopping for fresh fruit look for the little fruit flies.

Morning Walks

I surely have been enjoying my morning walks especially when Cecilia, my sweetie, comes along. Just when I had given myself up for dead, I now am walking briskly, (at 3 mph) almost every morning. We are up to about 2.5 miles per morning and will probably go 3 miles tomorrow. I have accumulated 51 miles to date. I also really enjoy my the Cardio tracker app on my smart phone. It plays my favorite music and tracks my progress. While we stroll through paradise. When I see a beautiful scene, I pause and snap it. My family is becoming "guarded" about their "proclaimations". If I question their validity I google it on my smartphone. On our trip, Lincoln was telling me about the "Darwin award". I googled it and found that he had recited the intent of the award almost word for word. But when I googled "lawn chair Larry" I found that his proclimation was somewhat erroronious. LIFE IS GOOD even though my heart is breaking for my little "Hopester" My dad used to really glory in the "Life of Riley". My Hopester actually had a wonderful "Life with Ryley" albeit ever so brief. She will continue having a wonderful life, because that's the kind of girl she is. We love Our Hopester.

My Honey and I were shopping at Wall Mart this morning. We purchased mostly apples, oranges, pears, water melon and bananas.
When the checker who was a very talkative, well matured Jamaican male

placed the bananas on the scale, the Melody hit me.

I told the checker that when he placed the bananas on the scale it reminded me of the Harry Belafonte song Banana Boat. Then I sang to him, "Load the Banana boat all night long, Day light come and me wan go home." He chimed right in on cue and sang "Come Mr. tally man, tally me banana"

He had a very mellow voice, making our Monday very melodious indeed! Life is Wonderful!

Then to top it off we were able to have a seren'dipitous rendezvous with our wonderful daughter Trudy.

We ate together at KFC, which was also like a melody.

Grandpa Sid's, very own, yummy ultra low cal (less than 1/2 weight watcher point per portion) Cherry flavored, jiffy any time snacks. (I have lost three lbs in almost as many days confining my snacking to these yummy morsels)

Apple and cherry are yummy. strawberry and raspberry are next on the list. Also oats are supposed to lower cholesterol, with which I don't have a problem, thank goodness.

My first trial had a lot of pureed raisins added, then raisins and cocoa powder. I experienced several good nose bleeds. I had forgotten that cocoa thins the blood and found that raisins do too. So I switched to the recipe below.

preheat oven to 175

Ingredients:

2 cups unsweetened apple sauce

4 cups old fashioned rolled oats

1 tsp vanilla

1 portion of Walmart's "great value" sugarless, cherry flavored drink mix

Combine apple sauce, flavor powder and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and mix throughly.

add rolled oats and mix throughly.

Spray a non stick on a large cookie sheet and spread the mix evenly over the whole sheet.

Place in preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

Remove from oven and cut into 1.5 x 3.5 wafers and place on a cooling rack.

Total weight watchers points for the recipe is 12.

New Wrinkle on the BP Biscuits

Preheat oven to 450 deg.

Into food processor measure:

2 cups flour

4 tsp Baking Powder

4 tsp sugar

1 brick unsalted butter (1/2 cup) refrigerated

Blend until uniform texture

add 1 cup great value plain yogurt, refrigerated

Blend until dough pulls away from sides

place ball of dough in standard canning jar ring and flatten (remove excess)

Remove dough from ring and place dough into 10x10 baking pan (crowd dough forms together)

The batch won't fit into a 9x9 pan

Bake for 15 minutes

These biscuits are HEAVENLY!

Grandpa's Sour Cream Biscuits

Dees are mine and day is Gooooood, I Garoonteeeeeee!
Ya have to hold 'em down or day float away :-)

Grandpa's Sour Cream Biscuits. (done in 20 minutes flat)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees

Ingredients:
2 cups all purpose flour
4 teaspoon fulls baking powder
4 teaspoon fulls sugar optional
1/2 cup or 1 brick butter, referigerated.
1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt. referigerated. dees ones day have sour cream.

Directions:
Place flour, dry ingredients and butter in a 2 qt food processor and "cut in the butter"
on high for about 1 minute or until completely blended. You can do dis wif yo fingas, but it ain't ezee.
Add sour cream or yogurt and blend until dough clumps or pulls away from sides of processor bowl. Remove Blade.

Da food processa makes all dis mixn, a "piece of cake" EZ fo sho.

With a large thumb ejecting ice cream scoup, or wif yo fingas, dip and place dobs about the size of a half of lemon close together on a cookie sheet. (1 1/2 to 2 doz.) I rolled deze between the palm of my hands and didn't flatten dem, and i placed dem apart. If yo put dem clos togeta da sides sta white and pretty like.

Optional:
After they are all arranged. flour da top lightly and press down with the bottom of a pint jar. (Flatten dem wif yo hands if ya want to)
The ones in the picture were not flattened, but were just rolled between the palms of my hands. I try da jar da next time.

Place in oven one notch above the middle and bake for 12 to 14 minutes.
Den stan back wen ya open dat door, cause dey fly way fo show.

Challenge:
I'll bet ya a nickel ya can't eat one wif out it falin to pieces befo ya git it all ta yo mouf.
Da only thing dat would make dem betta would be fresh strawberries and whip cream!

Now we have HD and can instant replay live tv, watch one program and record another. We can also record our favorite programs while we sleep. Because of the DVR, I began to investigate the settings for our TV and found that it was at 720 resolution and not 1080. So I set it to 1080. Then the DVR made the suggestion that I bump it up to 1080. IT'S INCREDIBLE! Now I have to find out how to make HD DVD's from our recorded programs.

Mom Surprised me too:

She ok'ed the purchase of two hearing aids, a red one and a blue one and now I can actually hear the tv without turning the volume too high. My grand children don't mumble any more. (Strange) The generosity of my loved ones is overwhelming.

At church they have listening devices that amplify only the sounds that come from the microphone, making it so that I can actually understand the speakers now. Boy was I handicapped while teaching Gospel Doctrine for two years.

I am really in "Fat City" in more ways than one!

In response to Tina's skating post, I have to say that my most memorable time on the ice was when I went skating with my dad and brothers on the slough Northwest of Abraham at the age of 5 or 6.

You guessed it, the ice was THIN, Very THIN, one half inch or so, and crystal clear. The water in the slough was shallow, a foot or two deep. I followed the brothers and Dad, and being last in line, I could see that we were skating on waves of water. In other words, a wave of water would move along in front of each skater. The ice would make a krinkleing sound as it flexed. There were patches of bull rushes almost everywhere as we were skating along the perimeter of the slough. I could see the moss and other green growth in the water under the ice. Stopping was not an option, because if anyone had stopped the ice would have given way.

We used very different equipment in those days,

I also went skating on hilly ice a little earlier in that same time period.

There had been some surplus irrigation water that Dad had diverted into a brush pasture not far from the canal down at what was known as the "Flat". The water had ponded in a sandy area that had high and low waves in the terrain. With brush known as grease woods on the tops of the high spots. The pond must have frozen to a thickness of about one half inch and while the ice was still flexible, the water under it seeped away, leaving the surface of the ground covered with a sheet of ice. It was like skating on a gentle roller coaster.

This may sound far fetched, but it is entirely true. I was there, and I skated on it.

Steve asked me to suggest where I thought a three car garage and woodworking shop should be placed on the lot, so I got busy and sketched up some alternatives and settled on this one. Extending the deck to cover a three car garage and placing the "shop" adjacent to it. Utilizing the slope of the roof tops and driveway to collect rain water into a cistern for yard watering.
I also depicted the new vinyl fence that has been ordered, and should be completed before winter.
The Second picture is a "Google Earth" image of the property from the same perspective.
Pretty Cool for a "dumb old farmer" even if I do say so myself!

Illustrations such as the one above tend to make us believe that earths breathable atmosphere is unlimited. Let me remind you that climbers of mount Everest need oxygen before they reach the summit which is a little over 29,000 feet above sea level, a little over 5 1/2 miles. The earth has a diameter of 8,000 miles. If the earth were scaled down to 8 inches each one thousandth of an inch would represent 1 mile. On this scaled down version of the earth the "breathable" atmosphere would be represented by 5 and 1/2 thousandths of one inch. Roughly twice the diameter of a human hair. Think of one strand of hair laying on a bald man's head. The breathable atmosphere would be that thick on an earth scaled to that size.

On the above illustration the reaches of the mesosphere would be exaggerated by the first thin halo surrounding the earth. The breathable atmosphere couldn't even be illustrated.
Try to imagine the slight halo around the earth in the illustration below and you will have a more realistic example of the expanse of our breathable atmosphere.

Our entire breathable atmosphere is aspirated by the human population (at rest) and their automobiles in about a year and one half. That is not even taking into account all the animals, insects, birds, train locomotives and airplanes. The jet engines on the commercial airliners are the most voracious consumers of oxygen imaginable exceeded only by forest fires. (example, one human at rest aspirates 43,200 liters of air in twenty four hours). (A 4 liter car aspirates 5,760,000 liters or air in one hour or 23,040,000 liters in four hours) (every liter aspirated is a liter polluted, 0xygen to Carbon dioxide)

Ninety percent of our universe is Hydrogen. Water is roughly fifty percent Hydrogen, the other half is oxygen. When water is split by electrolysis hydrogen and oxygen gas are formed. When combined the result is Hydroxy gas.

If only our automobiles could be powered by Hydroxy gas that is produced "on board" and "on demand" with water as the fuel, it would be a quantum turn away from the carbon polluter that the automobiles are, (carbon monoxide) to a "non carbon" polluter of our atmosphere. Because, when Hydroxy gas is burned it produces only energy and water. Basically PURE WATER!
The Sid-Cell is the vanguard to a clean atmosphere, planet saving technology.
